Online Time to Pay for VAT now available for some businesses

As of 31 May 2023 certain businesses can now set up a VAT payment plan online. Payment plans are also known as time to pay (TTP) agreements.

Which businesses are eligible?

A VAT-registered business can set up its VAT payment plan online if it meets the following criteria:

  • It has filed its latest VAT return;
  • the amount owed is £20,000 or less;
  • it is within 28 days of the payment deadline;
  • it does not have any other payment plans or debts with HMRC; and
  • it plans to pay off its debt within the next six months.

Which businesses are not eligible?

Businesses which are not eligible to use the online service include businesses that use the VAT cash accounting or annual accounting schemes. Also, businesses that make VAT payments on account cannot set up a payment plan online.

Businesses which are not eligible to use the online TTP service should contact HMRC if they need to agree a payment plan.
